The mission of the University of Manchester’s Aerospace Research Institute is to gain full benefit from the University's diverse research capability, to be internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in aerospace research and innovation and become a collaborator of choice. The University has a strong heritage of space research encompassing the pioneering radio astronomy work at Jodrell Bank, astrophysics, planetary science and cosmochemistry, space instrumentation and space technology development. The Space Theme brings together these capabilities and more to bring a cross and multi-disciplinary approach to our work.
TISICS operates a unique European facility to develop and manufacture metal matrix composites for high strength and stiffness light weight space systems and components. Fibre reinforced metal matrix composites are typically 30% lighter than conventional materials but up to 70% with optimised components designs.
TISICS is working with partners to develop near net shape pressure vessels and propellant tanks using both titanium and aluminium matrix systems. The aluminium matrix systems are aimed at demisable tanks for end of life re-entry.
TISICS is also developing low mass high stiffness titanium composite robot arms for space exploration and boom applications.

The UK Space Environments Association (UKSEA) proposes to serve as an umbrella organisation to support UK organisations that have activities or interests involving aspects of the Space environment or Space analogues. The Association will also benefit the UK Space sector as a whole through the efficiencies engendered in the improved communication, coordination and collaboration capabilities that the organisation will offer. The UKSEA is open to individuals and organisations working in the fields of education, business, industry and R&D activities related to the Space environment. The establishment of the UKSEA is now firmly underway and is due to be launched at the UK Space conference, Liverpool ACC, 13 - 15 July 2015.
The SPAAACE-Ware project is based at Ulster University in Northern Ireland. It has been funded by InvestNI. This is a proof of concept programme which aims to build on patents jointly held with NASA in the area of autonomic and apoptotic computing systems. The goal of the project is to develop software libraries that provide autonomic self-management capabilities which can be easily integrated with the software used to support spacecraft technologies.
The USIS Association is a planned company that will develop and control a Universal Space Interface Standard (USIS) that can undertake all the system to system connection roles for both human and robotic spacecraft. Its potential roles include a payload to launch system interface, an in-orbit docking system for spacecraft and a connection to enable the servicing of spacecraft. The USIS Association is planned to be owned by corporate bodies who would be stakeholders in the USIS and a full proposal, with planning for the first year and proposed Articles of Association, is available for interested organisations.
