The UK Space Agency is at the heart of UK efforts to explore and benefit from space. It is responsible for ensuring that the UK retains and grows a strategic capability in space-based systems, technologies, science and applications. As an executive agency of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, the Agency leads on the UK’s civil space programme in order to win sustainable economic growth, secure new scientific knowledge and provide benefit to all citizens. The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) ensures that innovative
science and technology contribute to the defence and security of the UK.
Dstl supplies specialist services to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and wider
government. It is the principal government organisation dedicated to science
and technology in the defence and security field. As a trading fund of MOD,
Dstl is run along commercial lines. Dstl works with a wide range of partners
and suppliers in industry, academia and overseas. Around 60% of MOD’s Science
and Technology Programme is delivered by these external partners and suppliers.
Space Systems Profile
The Dstl Space Programme will develop solutions to further mature space into a mainstream defence environment by 2025. It will support the Ministry of Defence in realising a flexible, reconfigurable and affordable military capability in support of the 2020 and 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Reviews, and support space procurement activities, including the successor to Skynet 5. Dstl’s Space Programme works alongside other Dstl experts, wider MOD, other government agencies and the UK’s international partners.
